How does Ultraviolet treatment compare with membrane filtration? Is it equally safe?

Ultraviolet is an internationally used technology for water purification. Ultraviolet rays have the property of inactivating disease-causing bacteria and virus. An ultraviolet purifier to be effective must have adequate pre-treatment facilities like a pre-filter and an activated carbon chamber which removes physical and organic impurities. The water that then flows out is physically, organically and microbiologically pure. Further, an ideal ultraviolet purifier must also have a monitoring system that continuously monitors the quality of output water and shuts off the system automatically if purification levels drop below pre-determined standards, thus ensuring that the water drawn is 100% pure and safe. Membranes are also sometimes used for water treatment. A fine porous membrane can also trap physical particles and some micro-organisms. Membrane filters are storage type where the water is filtered and is collected into a container from where it can be drawn.
